Tableau Dashboards and Visualizations
For this project I used SQL to query a public relational database with airline and fight info. I was curious about the times and day with the most cancellations. I also wondered if there were better months to fly and if so what days of the week were best to fly. I created interactive charts and a dashboard that you can access on tableau public by clicking the pictures to explore the data further.
Total Number of Canceled Flights By Airline
Southwest Airlines had the greatest number of flights in 2015 with about 1.3 million flights. Virgin America Airlines had the least number of flights at about 62,00 flights in 2015. This information could be useful to a staffing agency or the airline when considering staffing needs.
Are there more flights canceled in one month than the other? Is there a day of the week that flights are canceled more often?
American Eagle Airlines has the greatest number of canceled flights. American Eagle Airline’s number of canceled flights rose from 2,288 to 3,887 from January of 2015 to February 2015.When looking at cancelations by day, Monday’s cancelations totaled 3,859 and on Tuesday’s it drops to 1,783 cancelations. American Eagles least number of canceled flights happened in October of 2015 with just 273 flights being canceled. American Eagles busiest day of the week with the least number of cancelations are Saturdays.

When looking at all the airlines by month there seems to be a peak in cancelations in February as well as June and on Mondays and Thursdays. An airline may choose to lower staff numbers or provide days off to some staff members on Mondays and Thursdays in the months of February and June. I would also like to mention that while these numbers are from 2015, they are comparable to 2022. I compared ticket prices in June vs February in 2022 and the prices reflect the decrease in bookings.
Is there a relationship between diverted, canceled, delayed flights and the time in air? Is there a correlation between these factors and airline distance?
This dashboard provides information allowing you to compare one or more reasons for delays, cancelations or diverted flights as well as airline distance.
With the Time in Air and Diverted Flights you can see if there is a relationship between the time in air and diverted flights. I was curious if the more time spent in air led to more diverted flights or if airline distance led to more diverted flights. Southwest Airlines had the highest number of diverted flights at over 1.2 million and over 128 million in airtime. Virgin America comes in with the lowest number of diverted flights at just over 62 thousand and a little bit over 11 million in airtime. I do not believe there is a relationship between time in air and diverted flights, however I do believe there may be a possible positive relationship between the number of flights and flights diverted or cancelled.
By using this dashboard, you can also drill down into the data to see if there is a relationship between the amount of diverted flight and canceled flights for specific airlines. The last chart consists of numerous delay and cancelation reasons. This data is helpful not only in determining staffing needs but expected flight delays and the reason behind them. This could allow the airlines to be more proactive and minimize delays. By utilizing this data, the staffing agencies or airlines can staff according to the distance of airline flights.

While this data is from 2015 I find it is still very useful in 2022. I was curious to see if ticket prices reflected this same pattern so i drilled down on the ticket prices for June 2022 and February 2023. As suspected ticket prices were lower in February 2023 on Mondays than Mondays in June of 2022.
